# Latest list of changes

This changelog covers all changes prior to 28th August 2026

## What's added

Initially a few pages were transferred from the legacy site, to get a 'feel' of how they'd look in the new site
This was needed to get 'templates' in place for the different story types.
The original site had no templates, but did sort of follow some rules that I've refined.
Articles are broken down into three main categories for now; people, features, stories - this seems to apply to _most_ things so far
Ensured a consistent header and footer for ALL pages across the site
Added some 'quick links' to the header - such as 'home' 'about' 'dontate' and more
Added a 'donate' button
Added 'back to top' button to footer, as some articles are quite large
Added 'take me to a random feature' button to the footer. The reasoning behind this is to potentially surface articles 'buried' in the site.

## Notes / Observations

- Website rebuild is a Ship of Theseus - rebuilding piece by piece - that raises the question, will it be the same site?
- Roughly 80k files and 2969 folders

## Issues identified from legacy site

- Photo images, most have thumbnails images separate files
    - This causes a ton of bloat in files - for every picture, there are two files
    - Considering the site is primarily made up of pictures, this a large chunk of of work to update

- Images
    - Sometimes image names contain vital information for the image, not referenced anywhere in the text
    - I try to take this information and put into the "alt" tag or caption of the image, to retain
    - Sometimes images are annotated, removing the need for this
    - Sometimes images have no context of what they are other than the folder structure they're placed in
    - Sometimes images have a lot of context relating to the page they feature on, but nothing relating on the image
    - Administration of the images is a tough part of this conversion

- Some pages much more 'complex' than first anticipated
    - By complex, I do not mean technically complex to understand, I mean 'messily' put together and so harder to 'clean up'
    - There are pages embedded or buried under other pages
    - Galleries sometimes designed with all pics on one page, some have a picture per page
      - This is easy bloat to reduce

- A lot of dead links throughout the site
    - these will be tested, updated or removed
    - Many I've seen so far link to dead sites and so are removed along with the corresponding text

- As the design of the old website, images were often not placed with relevant text
    - Most likely due to lack of technical skill
    - Now reading through features or stories we can add relevant images near to text to give readers better context / interest in the article
    - This takes time, as it requires manually reading a lot of text, linking the image files to that text written

- There is also a degree of duplication with the files and folders too
    - Literal duplicate folders / carbon copies
    - Usually within folders of the same name
    - Probably a result of accidental drag and drop
